Who are the Wanderers?

One lazy Tuesday, a couple of office workers in North Brisbane were trying to figure out a way to spend their non-existent spare weekends and slow the ever-present ageing of their mid-30's bodies, when cricket seductively sauntered into the room. Dressed in yellowed and torn whites, second-hand Grey-Nic's gloves and a helmet with two screws missing, and carrying a cherry-stained Kaboom bat, she was too good to resist. Our esteemed gentlemen were transfixed and, with more gullible men in tow, willingly wandered to whichever rural club oval she took them in search of love and glory.

And so began the legend of the West End Wanderers Cricket Club.

A local team located on the Northside of Brisbane, the Wanderers compete on Sundays in the Queensland Sub Districts Competition during the summer season and in the Brisbane Warehouse Competition during the winter season. Our players range from all over Brisbane, Caboolture, Bayside and Southside and in ages from 15 to 50.

Originally called the Philthy Boys and founded by housemates Dorian Traill and Greg Bradley in 1996, the club has seen a number of years of success. Our first premiership was in the 1997/1998 Summer Sunday competition, as Dorian captained the C1 side to victory. The season was sweetened even further, as Michael Cupitt led the Saturday 2-day A4 side to the trophy as well.

1999/2000 saw another victory, this time taking out the A3 Sunday competition. Dorian gleefully tells the story of how the competition was actually the highest grade, despite not being A1 - a real point of pride for the club. Scott Francis (Scooter) led the side to victory over reigning premiers Pine Rivers in the final.

Sixteen years later, the Wanderers returned to their winning ways by winning the 2017 Winter B3 competition with a star-studded side of young fast bowlers and mature batsmen. Victory came in the Winter of 2018 (B3) where we scraped into the finals before storming home to the Premiership with three intense but immensely satisfying wins. In the Grand Final, we successfully defended 140 and won by 1 run.

The club succeeded in winning its first Summer premiership in 21 years with a dominant display in the 2020/2021 Summer QSDCA season. The season saw an amazing team effort with everyone contributing in fine fashion across the year, as well as an internet-breaking catch shared by MyCricket by our own Dorian Traill. New captain Matt Anderson guided the team home, beating Bracken Ridge in the final by 45 runs.

Recently, the club took home the gold in the 2024 C3 Warehouse Winter grand final, following up finals appearances in each of the last three seasons. After an up and down season, the Wanderers stormed home in the finals, thumping Peninsula in the semi and posting an all round team effort to win the final.

Our club goal is to get as many people out onto the field under our banner as possible and to reinforce our players love and admiration of the game. We pride ourselves on our clubs social element, with players often forming a tight-knit group with friendships that last for decades. Regardless of skill and experience, we endeavour to give any and all interested parties a run on the field and make them a part of the Wanderers family.

The clubs team selections are run on a 'first-in-best-dressed' policy. Messages are sent out to all payed members first, before remaining spots are filled in the following days. We charge a $30 sign-on fee for each season (club costs) and $25 per game (umpire/ground fees), which are significantly less than other clubs in the local area.
